Losing Weight: A Personal Journey and the Science Behind the Struggle
Introduction
Did you know that the average caveman in the Stone Age spent five times more energy on physical activity than the average American adult today? Back then, physical movement wasn’t optional—walking up to 16 kilometers a day, hunting for survival, and enduring days of pursuit made overeating less of a concern.
Fast forward to modern times, overeating has become a global issue, contributing to severe health risks such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. However, while these statistics are known to most, the personal struggle with weight loss is far deeper than facts and figures.
This story is about more than numbers—it’s about understanding that weight loss is not a simple recipe but a complex journey requiring a unique, personal solution.
The Weight Loss Complexity: Why is it so Hard?
When I worked as a hospital intern, I saw firsthand that the most painful consequence of obesity wasn’t physical—it was emotional. It’s losing confidence in oneself. Take a young girl as an example. At just 15 years old and weighing over 100 kilograms, she stood dressed for her high school prom, smiling bravely. But behind the smile, there was insecurity, the kind that can take years to heal. That young girl was me.
So, why is weight loss so difficult despite all the tips, diets, and exercise programs available? The answer lies in understanding three types of problems:
- Simple Problems – Like following a recipe. Basic steps lead to predictable outcomes.
- Complicated Problems – Sending a rocket to the Moon may be tough, but it’s achievable when broken into smaller tasks.
- Complex Problems – Raising a child or losing weight. There’s no set formula. Every person is unique, and success isn’t guaranteed.
Losing weight falls into the “complex” category. There’s no universal recipe, and what works for one person may not work for another.
The Illusion of “One-Size-Fits-All” Diets
Modern society often simplifies weight loss into one-dimensional solutions:
- “Drink this shake.”
- “Avoid carbs.”
- “Skip sugar and drink more water.”
But life isn’t that simple, and neither is weight loss. These claims ignore the emotional and mental complexities of the process.
When I lost 40 kilograms, people assumed I had the answer. Yet, seven years later, I still struggle to see the person in the mirror as others do. Physically, I achieved my goal. Emotionally, the journey continues.
A Personal Recipe for Weight Loss
Weight loss isn’t about finding a recipe—it’s about creating your recipe. It’s about learning what works for you and adapting it over time. Here are some ingredients to help:
-
Nutritional Balance
Focus on sustainable, healthy eating rather than quick fixes. Include whole foods, lean proteins, and avoid extreme restrictions. -
Exercise That You Enjoy
Physical activity doesn’t have to be intense or miserable. Find exercises that bring you joy—dancing, walking, cycling, or sports. -
Mental Resilience
Understand that setbacks are normal. Weight loss is as much a mental challenge as a physical one.
Conquering Your Fears: The Final Step
One of the hardest parts of my journey was overcoming fear. The fear that I’d still be seen as “fat” or not good enough haunted me for years. But as Nelson Mandela once said:
“Courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it.”
Sharing my story is how I conquer this fear. It’s not easy, but I know I’m not alone.
Conclusion: Your Journey, Your Recipe
If you’re struggling with weight loss, know this: There is no perfect recipe. It’s about finding your own ingredients—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and creating a solution that works for you.
Most importantly, remember that at the end of the day, the only person who needs to be satisfied with the “final dish” is you.
Thank you for being part of this story. I hope you find strength, inspiration, and courage to keep going.
